FLO TV Goes National – Expands Live Mobile TV Service as DTV TransitionÂ
Frees Broadband SpectrumÂ
 — FLO TV Set to Reach More Than 200 Million Potential Consumers, Ushering in a New Era of Television Viewing on the Go —
SAN DIEGO — June 10, 2009 — FLO TV Incorporated, provider of the FLO TV™ live mobile TV service and a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), today announced that the FLO TV service will expand its service nationwide following the DTV transition on June 12, which frees up broadband spectrum for FLO TV’s dedicated network. FLO TV will expand into 39 new markets, offering its service to an additional 60 million customers with a total reach of more than 100 major markets and more than 200 million potential consumers nationwide by the end of 2009. This will complete FLO TV’s creation of the only dedicated, linear, live mobile TV network, allowing consumers to access broadcast-quality news, sports and entertainment on their mobile devices.Â
Fifteen new markets will go live immediately following the DTV transition on June 12, bringing service to major markets such as Boston, Houston, Miami and San Francisco, while others will follow throughout the year. In addition to adding new markets, immediately upon the transition, FLO TV also will expand service in existing markets including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC.Â
“The DTV transition is a milestone for TV lovers everywhere; with the completion of FLO TV’s nationwide network, consumers across the country now have the ability to watch TV on the go with the same high quality they’d expect in their living rooms,” said Bill Stone, president of FLO TV.  ”With this national coverage, we are poised to take on the next level of consumer engagement by bringing the FLO TV service to customers on multiple entertainment devices beyond the mobile phone.”
In January, FLO TV announced that it has teamed with Audiovox, the marketer of automotive entertainment systems, to be the exclusive supplier of in-vehicle units that will work with a car’s existing video viewing equipment to enable passengers to watch FLO TV in their cars. In addition, Audiovox also will produce the only FLO TV-ready overhead drop down video as well as head rest systems units in the market.  Continued cooperation with leading companies will ensure that FLO TV is available to consumers across multiple platforms in conjunction with the expansion in service coverage.Â
The FLO TV service is delivered using a technology that delivers video over the company’s own dedicated mobile network, offering full–length simulcast and time–shifted programming from some of the world’s top entertainment brands including CBS, ESPN, FOX, MTV and NBC. FLO TV also offers original content, having last month announced a deal with famed video blogger Amanda Congdon to bring exclusive content to subscribers.Â
Mobile TV Usage on the Rise
According to a recent report by Nielsen, mobile video viewing grew 52 percent in Q1 2009 compared with the previous year.* FLO TV market research shows that viewers who watch the FLO TV service are spending an average of more than 25 minutes per day watching television on their phones. This is comparable to the average time U.S. cell phone users spend per day talking on their cell phones, according to CTIA’s Semi–Annual Wireless Industry Survey 2008. The appeal of FLO TV’s live programming is illustrated by a consistent pattern of increased viewership and consumer demand for major sporting and significant news events including an increase of 80 percent or more during the Presidential Inauguration and the 2008 Summer Olympics (exclusive programming to AT&T).Â
The FLO TV service is available on the top two U.S. wireless carriers, including AT&T as AT&T Mobile TV. To learn more about FLO TV, please visit http://www.flotv.com.

Debbie Stier, SVP, Associate Publisher, HarperStudio
Â

Debbie is the only person she knows who will admit that running the NYC marathon was the biggest waste of time, not to mention incredibly painful. She firmly believes in the value of a candle-lit family dinner, but when she’s on her own she’ll settle for a bowl of cereal at the counter while going through mail. Her idea of heaven is a stack of New Yorkers on a beach with a Scrabble partner who’s not afraid of losing a silly game. Biggest pet peeve: People who say it can’t be done.
Eric Frank, Founder and Chief Marketing Officer, Flat World Knowledge
Â

Eric was born and raised in Boston, and has lived in Philadelphia and New York. Sometimes, he gets confused and thinks that Pittsburgh is the west coast. He used to have more diverse passions in life, but now, as co-founder of three concurrent startups– two-year old Miya, one-year old Emma, and Flat World Knowledge, also one, his passions have become singularly focused: the pursuit of sleep. It may be a while yet.
Eric brings an 11 year track record of success in higher education publishing. He has held positions in sales, editorial, and marketing at Thomson (now Cengage –so much more 2.0-ish, yes?) and Prentice Hall, a division of Pearson Education. Recently, Eric was Director of Marketing for Prentice Hall Business Publishing, a division with annual sales in the hundreds of millions. There, he managed a team of marketing managers and marketing communications staff, and had overall responsibility for strategy, budget, staffing and execution. Eric’s group had dotted line responsibility for training and supporting over 160 sales representatives.
It must be said that given a choice, Eric much prefers a hug from his co-founder, Mayu, of the non-Flat World ventures. That said, a nice hug from Jeff every once in a while is okay, too.

He develops innovative user interface experiences for next-generation digital devices and is an authority on haptics technologies and its applications to mobile communications and other industries.  His tenure at Immersion includes senior level research and research-management positions, notably leading the effort behind the haptic rendering algorithms that are now shipping in over 50 million consumer devices. Prior to Immersion, Danny consulted with Haptic Technologies to design and patent high-resolution optical sensors for an award-winning force feedback mouse.  He received a doctorate degree in electrical engineering from McGill University in 1999 with a focus on control and robotics, where he continues as an adjunct professor. As senior member of the IEEE, he is the author of several publications on the design of haptic devices, interfaces and controls and holds over 50 US issued or pending patents.

“CEA Line Shows is a critical event for my teams at Engadget, Switched, TUAW, and Download Squad. In a tech editorial environment that is increasingly (and understandably) remote and mobile, in-person shows like these are a welcome rarity. Not only do they get my guys and girls out of their home offices, but they have also created innumerable hands-on and breaking stories chock-full of the video and images our readers have come to love and expect. The smaller size of CEA Line Shows means that my journalists can get their job done in a consumable environment as compared to the multi-day, exhausting conferences. Both have their place, but I am for one forever a fan of the smaller CEA Line Shows.”
